Reaching out or Embracing the Whole

Reaching out

I want to know the world, touch it, be a part, belong. I’m reaching out, following the news on the web, the radio and TV. Scanning my facebook feed to know what my friends are up to. I’m checking videos, listening to discussions about the latest topics.

The world is moving forward, and I want to be a part. I care about what is happening. I want to be responsible and well-informed, and because you are reading this, you probably want the same.

Yesterday morning I realised that this way of reaching out to the world is superficial, there is no real relation. I’m consuming bits of information from out there, from random sources, chosen by others. I’m overwhelmed by small pieces of data and frequently more confused than informed.

During 2018 I’ll change that and focus on two other ways of relating – one closer and one wider. Two ways of relating that are mutual and nurturing.

Closer relations

The closer way of relating is my personal relations with family and friends, and everyone I meet face to face or voice to voice. Interacting, playing, struggling, learning, living here and now, creating in this present moment. Just as we humans always have done and that all animals and plants do all day long in their way.

Wider relations

The wider way of relating is, of course, my relations to all my Wider Embraces. My relationships with everything I’m a part of, every Embrace I belong to; the Embraces of my family, my hometown, my country, the Embrace of Humanity, the Biosphere and the Universe and all Embraces in between.

Leaning out into them one by one, being them, taking them as my perspective, getting new insights, feeling how my body relaxes and my mind gets more still. Deeply belonging. Unconditionally.

Deeply belonging

Instead of getting fragmented and random events beamed at me, events I can’t do anything about, and that just makes me feel more distant and helpless, I’ll embrace everything, becoming more aware of my place as a single human being inside the complex ecology of relations that I’m a part of.

My relations with all my Wider Embraces are mutual relations. Something happens to me and to the Embrace when I activate the relationship by becoming aware of it, and as it. Something happens beyond the insights I get, and the bodily sensations and relaxation. My interpretation is that we strengthen the flow, the patterns, the communication, the belonging, the web, the whole ecology of Embraces that we are part of, that we are. And that is healing.

Dominant species

And yes, of course, it helps to know about the world, in order to Embrace it. So I’ll continue to check out the news now and then and look at documentaries, and glans at my friends facebook pages once in a while.

I will continue to be curious about almost everything but focus on my mutual relations – close and wide. That is my New Year resolution.

A Double Perspective – Being the Embrace and the Embraced

Being the Embrace and the embraced

You’ve probably seen the videos and the cartoons, maybe shared some of them yourself, where Mother Earth is crying or being wrathful against humanity, or Gaia hates her humans, seeing us as germs, hoping to get rid of us, fast.

Yes, we humans have messed up this planet, immensely. Especially the ones of us, who consume the most. Our feelings of fear and guilt are appropriate human emotions, but to project those emotions onto the Biosphere is neither right nor does it solve anything.

When we lean out into the Embrace of the Biosphere or any of our wider Embraces, what we experience is that we are held, unconditionally. The Embrace of the Biosphere holds me. I’m at home. I belong here.

When we take the perspective as the Biosphere, we are life on Earth, holding all living beings, including all humans, unconditionally.

And we can enter into a double perspective where we are the Embrace of the Biosphere and this human being at the same time. Being the Embrace and the embraced. Holding and being held. A two-way relation with an expanded self.

Great, no guilt, no angry Gaia, just unconditional Embraces! So I can keep going and continue to consume and I don’t have to think about other species or future generations? Not exactly.

When I know that I’m the whole Biosphere, that there is no separation, there is a lot of work to do and changes to make. But they are made from a creative and loving place. A place inside me, as this human being, and inside me as the Embrace of the Biosphere. A powerful place with potential for a profound transformation – inner and outer.

Humanity is not a part of the Biosphere – I am

Humanity is not a part of the Biosphere – I am

Humanity is not held by the Embrace of the Biosphere, but each one of us is.

This insight came to us last Wednesday when the group that is focusing on the relation between Humanity and the Biosphere met online.

We began with taking the perspective as the Embrace of the Biosphere, leaning inwards, enfolding all living beings, unconditionally. Then two of us took the perspective as the Embrace of Humanity, being inside the Embrace of the Biosphere. There was no connection, just separation, from both sides.

Then I asked the participants who had taken the perspective as the Embrace of Humanity, to let go of that Embrace and lean out into the Embrace of the Biosphere, as human beings. Instantly a distinct energy shift occurred in all of us and the Embrace of the Biosphere. No separation anymore, but a deep, joyful and healing connection.

I am a single, human being, part of Humanity, held by the Embrace of Humanity.
I am a single, biological being, part of the Biosphere, held by the Embrace of the Biosphere.

Every living being on planet Earth is held by the Embrace of the Biosphere, regardless of what species, we belong to. There is no group membership in the Embrace of the Biosphere. An Embrace is holding its parts, not other Embraces.

I thought I got it all sorted out when I went from seeing Nature and Culture as separate spheres, to see that Humanity is inside the Biosphere. But that is also a separation. There is no collective, human layer, which separates me from all other living beings. I’m fully and directly integrated into the Biosphere. No intermediation.

The Embrace of Humanity and the Embrace of the Biosphere are both real and of the same sort, but they don’t have a relation. The seer can’t be seen. The Embrace can’t be embraced. Perspectives can’t see each other. An Embrace is a perspective; it deals with its parts, not with other Embraces.

PS Yes, I know it isn’t easy to get your head and heart around this, not for me either. I’m still working on finding a structure and a language that can mediate our experiences in a clear and understandable way. And the only way to get it is to do it, to experience it yourself, welcome to join!

Report from our First “Humanity and the Biosphere” Online Session

Humanity and the Biosphere

Yesterday evening we met online for the first Wider Embraces session dedicated to the relation between the Biosphere and Humanity. Right there and then, the Wider Embraces and my lifelong dedication to sustainability merged. Yes!

We have been working with this relation now and then during the last five years as a part of our exploration into the wider Embraces. This time the purpose wasn’t to examine the Wider Embraces or develop the method, but to use WE as a tool.

Here are some hints about what we experienced during our gathering yesterday:

As the Embrace of the Group, we felt supported and a quality of the energy that was more active than usual.

As the Embrace of Humanity, holding all human beings unconditionally, there was a powerful energy field. Our impression is that there is an almost infinite demand. Humanity felt very occupied with itself, an inward facing bubble, with no real capacity left for other species.

As the Embrace of Humanity, leaning out into the Embrace of the Biosphere, we felt spaciousness, calmness, liberated and healed. The Embrace of the Biosphere is holding Humanity and every one of us, unconditionally.

Later in the evening, I felt a sincere hope, or more like a knowing, that Humanity will find its place on Planet Earth among all other living beings in a harmonious way. I don’t know if this is only wishful thinking, or not, but I know that it makes me grounded and dedicated to this work.

You are welcome to join next week, or any Wednesday evening in the future, at 20.00-21.00 CET. Everyone’s contribution is valuable.

Flowing Again

Time for Wider Embraces to flow out into the world again. This website will, bit by bit, be filled with resources:

  • Guided Embraces – experience the Wider Embraces yourself.
  • Online events where we take collective perspectives together.
  • Blog posts with ideas and theories around belonging, relating, consciousness, perspectives and much more.

It has now been five years of exploration, guided by the question “Who is Embracing?”. Every time I think I got what this is about, there is a new turn, a new insight.

In March this year, I was sure we had it all set, we were a dedicated group of friends and a well-developed method to present. So we invited a circle of friends. In May, a new insight struck – It has to be clear that Wider Embraces is more than a method, it has implications that may challenge your worldview. And at its core, it is about the relationship between Humanity and the Biosphere.

This new turn made it necessary to reorganise, again. Close down some parts and open to new possibilities and you, who read this, have the opportunity to join and be part of the future development.

Flowing again

At this turning point in the life of the Wider Embraces Project, it’s time to honour everyone who has contributed.  The ones who have been part of exploring the Embraces and developing the method from scratch. I’m especially thinking of the beautiful, playful group of ladies in Höör and my circle of integral friends from around Sweden. Every one of you has contributed in so many ways, with heart and mind, with your knowledge and time. Without you, the Wider Embraces would not be.

Now it’s time to take the next step together, old and new friends, inside all our wider Embraces!
